Having sound biosecurity protections in place are among the best preventative measures producers can take to protect the state’s $13 billion poultry industry, he said.
New research measuring the impact of America’s game bird farms and hunting preserves reveals that the industry contributes nearly $1.7 billion annually to the U.S. economy.
This figure, along with many others that delve deeper into the industry’s social and economic benefits, comes from the study “Economic Impact of the Gamebird Industry,” which was funded by the National Shooting Sports Foundation for the North American Gamebird Association.
Game bird producers and other farmers are being cautioned on new aggressive tactics being used by animal rights activists to misrepresent agriculture and affect public opinion.
The Animal Agriculture Alliance, which is an ally of the North American Gamebird Association, is warning farmers that animal rights activist groups are using unmanned aircraft systems or “drones” in their efforts to capture images and footage for use in media campaigns damaging public perception of animal agriculture.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued recommendations aimed to help producers ensure the use of safe feed in poultry and animal production, to prevent contaminants such as mycotoxins and excess minerals from reaching consumers.
The recommendations apply to all feed, whether obtained from commercial suppliers or produced on the farm, and include all phases of the food chain from acquisition to storage.
Effective February 9, 2016, a biosecurity plan must be in place to allow a farm to be indemnified for losses due to Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza.
This is an emergency rule put in place by the USDA.
These actions are being taken in an effort to solidify policies surrounding the payment of indemnity and further strengthen biosecurity adherence at poultry operations.
A new study just released from the University of Minnesota says farmers tilling fields near turkey barns may have fueled the spread of last spring’s avian influenza outbreak.
According to the study, soil in the tilled fields may have been contaminated with the droppings of migrating birds believed to be a source of the highly pathogenic H5N2 avian influenza.
