On the heels of research revealing that America’s game bird farms and hunting preserves contribute nearly $1.7 billion to the U.S. economy, a new study shows the overall firearms industry—including selling guns, ammunition and other hunting gear at preserves—pumps another $49 billion into the national lifeline.

Harrisburg, PA – Despite few highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) reports in early 2016, Pennsylvania Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding reminds poultry producers of the need to remain vigilant and practice good biosecurity measures.

Having sound biosecurity protections in place are among the best preventative measures producers can take to protect the state’s $13 billion poultry industry, he said.

Study Reveals Game Bird Industry’s Economic, Social Impacts

New research measuring the impact of America’s game bird farms and hunting preserves reveals that the industry contributes nearly $1.7 billion annually to the U.S. economy.

This figure, along with many others that delve deeper into the industry’s social and economic benefits, comes from the study “Economic Impact of the Gamebird Industry,” which was funded by the National Shooting Sports Foundation for the North American Gamebird Association.

Farmers Cautioned About New Activist Tactics

Game bird producers and other farmers are being cautioned on new aggressive tactics being used by animal rights activists to misrepresent agriculture and affect public opinion.

The Animal Agriculture Alliance, which is an ally of the North American Gamebird Association, is warning farmers that animal rights activist groups are using unmanned aircraft systems or “drones” in their efforts to capture images and footage for use in media campaigns damaging public perception of animal agriculture.

FDA Issues Feed Safety Guidelines

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued recommendations aimed to help producers ensure the use of safe feed in poultry and animal production, to prevent contaminants such as mycotoxins and excess minerals from reaching consumers.

The recommendations apply to all feed, whether obtained from commercial suppliers or produced on the farm, and include all phases of the food chain from acquisition to storage.
