GULFPORT, MS—Jan. 23, 2017—Gamebird producers and hunting preserve operators from across the continent are gathered on the Gulf Coast this week for the 85th annual North American Gamebird Association’s Educational Conference and Convention, which runs Jan. 23-25 at the Island View Resort Casino Gulfport, Mississippi.
The convention includes a lineup of seminars and presentations from industry experts, along with a trade show, banquet and other festivities.
The event opened with a sobering update on avian influenza from Andy Rhorer, former senior coordinator of the National Poultry Improvement Plan. Rhorer reported on current outbreaks abroad and recent findings in North America.
Dr. Margaret Oeller of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration provided timely information on the Veterinary Feed Directive, offering recommendations on obtaining pheasant, quail and partridge medicines in the wake of new governmental regulations.
As a bonus, Pennsylvania State University’s Dr. Eva Pendleton revealed the latest recommendations on biosecurity for gamebird producers, and David Neumann of Plitz, Williams and La Rosa addressed the group with tax-planning advice for farms and preserves.
